Manufactured by the Fray Machine Tool Company of Glendale, California, the Fray “All-Angle” universal milling machine, together with a number of different vertical heads, were produced from the late 1930s to the mid 1950s. The table has three T-slots, and is 36″ long and 9″ wide with longitudinal and cross travels of 22 and 8 inches respectively – and a vertical movement of 16 inches. The zeroing micrometer feed dials are all generously proportioned – a full 3 inches in diameter – with all the feed screws supported on adjustable, friction-reducing radial-thrust bearings. The saddle-to-knee ways are particularly large and both that surface, and the table’s, are lubricated by a “one-shot” system supplied from a hand-pump. This Fray Milling Machine is in great condition as you can see from the pictures, very clean and a rare find. This machine was in a one man patternmakers shop, he had it almost all of its life. It also has the upgraded motor from the factory, 1-1/2 hp an original Westinghouse motor! Untouched, unrestored with original paint and original motor. These do not come up for sale often. For people unfamiliar with them, Fray has the same basic table X, Y, and Z axes as other mills, but also has other axes available as seen in the photos. It so very versatile. It also has a very high top speed of 6500 RPM, so it is even usable for wood milling. It has a NMTB #30 taper. The machine is in very good working order, but not perfect. The threaded stop for the fast hand feed quill operation is missing, and the small lower boss receiver is cracked (but present). The motor cover is gone (which seemed to happen often with these machines for some reason). This is the 1 1/2HP model. It is 3PH with reverse switch on the motor. This machine’s ways are in excellent shape, and there is some scraping “frosting” still visible. The “New Departure” bearings are in very good shape.
