This is a Clausing model 8512 vertical mill. It isn’t a typical Clausing 8520 type machine, but a variant of it. Everything about it is identical to the 8520 type machines except the head. The head is some type of water driven/water jet type unit that is badged by Raytheon. I bought 2 of these machines, and it is my understanding that they came from a optical lense/glass company. There isn’t a whole lot of info out there on the “interwebs” about the Clausing 8512′s. From what limited info that I was able to obtain, it seems that Clausing offered these machines with either a Bridgeport M Head installed on them, or they were offered with no head assembly at all. Some of them came with only one table crank handle on them, and others had both handles. These machines have only the one handle on them. I have no idea who fitted these machines with the Raytheon heads. I also have no idea how these heads work, only that they were driven by water and used in the optical glass cutting/shaping field. The machine itself is in outstanding condition with no noticeable wear. The table and ways are pristine since they were never subject to any form of metalworking, and the wear/damage that would be associated with that type of use. This machine came out of a laboratory environment rather than a machine shop. As far as I’m concerned, the head is probably useless, and the value in this machine would be to mount a Bridgeport or some other smaller vertical type milling head to it. You would then have an almost new, compact and very capable milling machine. I have provided the best pictures that I could to try to show the head and pump. I will do my best to answer any questions on this machine, but again, I admit that I know almost nothing about the head and it’s operation. The knee crank handle is also included although it is not pictured.
