Wells-Index Model 40 Vertical Milling Machine

For sale is a wells-index model 40 vertical milling machine, serial number 450. This machine was originally designed (& possibly built) by blank & buxton (b & b) as their model 40-h miller. It was made in 1939 or ’40. Wells-index does not have company records prior to about s. 750, if i recall correctly. The table is 8″ x 30″, overall, with a 22″ working surface that has three 1/2″ t-slots. The table surface is in fair condition. The right side of the knee has a sloppy repair, as shown in the 8th photo. The table travel is as follows: x-axis is 16″, y-axis is 8.5″, and the z-axis is 16.25. The throat is 9.25. ” the quill diameter is 2.875″ with 3.25 travel. There is no power down-feed to the quill. And as shown in the 9th photograph, the back left side of the casting that holds the quill is cracked – possibly from someone over tightening the lock. The spindle is the original brown & sharpe no. 9 taper, and it comes with three collets: 3/8, ” 1/2, ” and 5/8. The spindle motor is possibly a replacement, for it is rated at 1.5 h. And the table cross-feed motor appears to be the original. Both motors are 3-phase, 220/440 volts. When i got this in january of 2006 it was running and being used regularly without any problems, and was wired at the 220 range. According to the manual, a copy of which comes with it, it weighs approximately 1,250 pounds. This is local pick-up only. If you wish to see it in person, please contact me.
