Very Rare Antique or Vintage BROWN & SHARPE Serial # 84 Tool and Cutter Grinder or Milling Machine 6358 Dividing Head in outstanding used condition – the predecessor to today’s Hardinge and Yuasa Indexing Tools and a scarce find for collectors or to put to use right away – with many modern versions now even referred to as the Brown & Sharpe type. This terrific and extremely rare early Brown & Sharpe Dividing Head Set was acquired recently from a closed local machine shop with Bridgeport CNC and TESA Milling Machines, along with South Bend 9 Heavy 10 and 13 Lathes. For sale is a complete set of Brown and Sharp change gears for a dividing head. They are in excellent condition, and come in the original wooden box. The box was painted ostensibly by some factory maintenance person or somesuch. The top was peeling when I got it a few years ago, and I carefully scraped away the paint to expose what you see in the picture. It would look great if the paint was all stripped and the box refinished. These do not come up for sale often. For people unfamiliar with them, Fray has the same basic table X, Y, and Z axes as other mills, but also has other axes available as seen in the photos. It so very versatile. It also has a very high top speed of 6500 RPM, so it is even usable for wood milling. It has a NMTB #30 taper. The machine is in very good working order, but not perfect. The threaded stop for the fast hand feed quill operation is missing, and the small lower boss receiver is cracked (but present). The motor cover is gone (which seemed to happen often with these machines for some reason). This is the 1 1/2HP model. It is 3PH with reverse switch on the motor. This machine’s ways are in excellent shape, and there is some scraping “frosting” still visible. The “New Departure” bearings are in very good shape.
